Robin Earle
1933 Compton Bassett “Future Mens Cricket Club”. Photo taken on the front lawn of Manor Farm. The club formed by Capt. & Mrs Fielding-Johnson. A prepared area of the field (now known as “Cricket Field”) was fenced off with iron railings. The pitch and outfield was maintained by Mr Arthur Bradfield – a well known cricketer in the district. He also coached club members and was in charge of the team. As the photo shows, we all had our own flannels, blazer and cap initialled FMCC – issued by Capt. Fielding-Johnson (for matches only). The also supplied all the equipment needed. For all home games they would lay on a super tea in the shed (still standing) in the corner of the front paddock. When Mrs Fielding-Johnson’s sons were home from college, 4 of the village boys had to drop out so that they could play. In the photo they are all in the team – Diccon Earle (Captain); David Earle, Peter Earle; Robin Earle. Reg Rumming: “I was one of the boys dropped, still we didn’t really mind because we still had our tea!” Front row (from left) 1. Peter Earle; 2. Ken Bowery; 3. Diccon Earle (Captain) 4. David Earle; 5. Fred Evans. Back Row (from left) 1. Charlie Summers; 2. Sid Clarke; 3. Bob Bowery; 4. Robin Earle; 5. Tom Smith; 6. Austin Barrett.
