1932. Jack Rumming holding two fox cubs he reared. Photo taken in his garden at No 60 Compton Bassett. "Uncle Jack" was a great village character. For years he was "Father Christmas" at children's parties. He would sing some good comic songs at social evenings held in the "long room" at the pub (Now the skittle alley). A great worker for the old village flower show, he worked at Sands Farm for years; rabbit catching during the winter months on various farms around. He never rode a bicycle - walked everywhere. His brother James left the village and went to live at Castle Coombe. Jack would walk from No 60 Compton Bassett to see him. He said it was a bit too far to go and back the same day, so stayed the night returning the next day. When asked about walking that distance, he would say he knew "the shortcuts!” (About 16 miles and would have taken about 5 hours)
